Being a kid and other stories…

I drink orange juice because I need Vitamin C… we all need vitamins, we all need more yellow/orangy things to ingest; bananas are getting tired of the reputation. I once said to someone “living healthy costs money” and I didn’t even have a kid yet! It does costs more money to eat healthier, that’s for sure and I gotta tell you that it is very easy to forget that being a vegan does not mean you’re automatically eating what’s good for you all the time. We also need calcium -someone told me spanish and mediterranean women are more prone to calcium deficiency; definitely NOT a doctor!- and zinc, because the lozenges taste like you’re chewing on aluminum foil. Has anyone noticed how we have taken other people’s “professional” opinions in lieu of listening to ourselves and our own bodies? The doctors, well, some I get, oncologists and pediatricians especially; but the majority of the medical practice here in the United States has become much more a part of bureaucracy than the simply act of treating people in order to make them feel better. I must admit that a lot of this comes from bitterness, after toy recalls and health care reform promises I wonder where I stand, as a mother and as someone three steps away from a bubble.

While most of you are still sleeping, I wake up and drive to work. These are the times when it matters, being challenged at a job you love and wondering if half-days with the kid will affect her in the long run. And what’s the “long run” anyways? It’s the memories others create for you, when you’re a bystander due to age or duty. Parenting is good when you balance your needs with the satisfaction of forming a decent human being, when they miss you ’cause you’ve been gone but eventually figuring out that the comforts they enjoyed were because of such time apart. We go to the park and we move furniture, we change locations and learn to use the potty, time flies when you’re busy getting it all together. I miss the time I had, perhaps when a day hasn’t gone too well but there’s the morning and the week turns to a weekend… I miss writing.

I’ve been neglecting some good people in my life and I know this, I’ve known this and since I took some time to write a few things down I want to say how important they still are. I want to say that sometimes this car takes you through detours that seem longer to get to, just if you move, keep me updated as to where to turn… to find you.
